Editor’s Pick: Tocca Fragrances
On my dresser, I have an attractive display of about a dozen bottles of perfume. Sadly, I have not consistently worn a fragrance in over five years. Most of these bottles are at least 50% full. I don’t how it happened but one day I was suddenly unable to tolerate most fragrances. First, I noticed that I was beginning to have an adverse reaction to fragrance on others. This was not always the case. I used to appreciate scent on men and women alike. Ultimately, I became self-conscious about how fragrance smelled on me. I also noticed that I would test a new fragrance on my wrist and it would smell wonderful. Then, five hours later it was suffocating and sour. Despite this, I continue to browse fragrances. I can’t help it. The process is still fun. And thank goodness because that’s how I discovered Tocca fragrances.
It was spring. I had the day off and a 15% Off Sephora coupon burning a hole in my pocket so I headed to the mall. Shopping is so much more enjoyable during the week when everyone else is working. NO CROWDS. I took my sweet time in Sephora testing this and testing that. Then I headed to the fragrances. I was immediately drawn to Tocca’s fresh, feminine, romantic packaging. Of course, I spent the next few minutes testing the five or six fragrances on display. All were beautiful but Giulietta was my runaway favorite. And Stella was a close second.
I’m not a wine connoisseur but I know what I like. I am also not a fragrance expert but I know what I like and I truly enjoy Giulietta. Giulietta is a floral fragrance that Tocca describes as having top notes of Bulgarian Rose, Ylang Ylang, Green Apple, and Pink Tulips. I can’t tell you what Ylang Ylang smells like but I can tell you that this is one of prettiest fragrance I’ve owned. When I wear it I feel extra feminine, soft, and sweet. I think many would enjoy Giulietta as a spring/summer fragrance but I can wear it year round. The one drawback is that, because the fragrance is so light, it may not last throughout the day.
It took me a while to actually use Stella because I was so enthralled with Giulietta. But, once fall turned into winter, I was ready to try something new. Stella is also very beautiful and is described as a floral scent with key notes of Blood Orange, White Freesia, and Sandalwood. That sounds delightful but it smells even better. When I wear Stella, I’m ready to go out, to be noticed, and to start mesmerizing men! Lol! Stella stays with you longer than Giulietta but this does not mean that it’s heavy or cloying. It’s just right as long as you apply appropriately.
Quick Tip: Forget pulse points. Apply fragrance to the BACK of your neck. I’ve discovered that I can tolerate and enjoy Giulietta and Stella from Tocca. However, this new found tolerance is also due to application advice that was given to me by a very helpful Sephora associate and fragrance expert. I can’t recall his name. However, he worked with me for at least 20 minutes. I explained my dilemma. Then he revealed the secret: apply the scent to the BACK of the neck vs. at the typical pulse points. Raise your hand if you already knew this! This was the best beauty advice I’d received in a long time. Since I now apply it to the back of the neck, I am no longer disturbed by the scent hitting my nose all day. When I’m walking and the wind is behind me, the perfume wafts gently around me. Aaaaah. It’s such a lovely treat. Also, I believe that the heat from my pulse points breaks down a fragrance throughout the day. And this results in an unpleasant scent. This new technique avoids that. And pairing this approach with these Tocca scents produces an appealing sillage*. This is now the only way I wear any fragrance. It makes me want to try more.
*Sillage (pronounced as see-yazh) is the degree to which the aroma lingers in the air after you’ve walked away. For an expert overview of sillage see this great article.
Fragrance is individual. Yet, I recommend that you check out Tocca. The decision was difficult because all of the scents were enchanting. Giulietta is my #1 favorite but I also enjoy Stella. Giulietta is light but not long lasting. To increase its longevity, apply to skin AFTER your moisturizer. The more hydrated your skin, the longer the fragrance will last. These days roll-on fragrances are everywhere. I love them because they are an affordable way to try a fragrance without a long-term commitment. But they’re also great because they’re portable. So you may want to carry a Tocca roll-on in case you need to reapply later. And for those with a sensitive nose like me, try applying to the back of the neck. It may change your life.
So what’s your favorite fragrance? How do you apply? Do you like rollerballs?
